COUNTRY CROSS PARK

NORTH POMONA

PALOMARES PARK

Thesis:

Parks located near schools must consider looking at more than aesthetics of a park, but consider looking at crime rates, safety for younger students, accessibility, proper equipment for nearby age groups and if/how the parks can challenge today's young students.

Questions:

1. Are these parks well equipped for the appropriate age groups of new by schools?

2.Do the young students utilize the parks to their full potential?

3. Are they well equipped as well as accessible to the young students from elementary, middle and high school or just target one group?

4. What do these parks provide in programs like soccer, baseball (T-ball), and educational programs?

Below are the findings of the four chosen parks of Pomona, CA

* Scroll down to read each of the parks findings. The preliminary work includes visiting each park examining the equipment, cleanliness of the park, examining the amount of shade for visitors to enjoy, how the grass appeared for sport activities, interviews of visitors of the park  (can be looked at on the PARKS Tab), Videos, and numerous photos of each park taken by Jamie A Regalado. Secondary data can be looked at when visiting the SOURCES Tab.

Parks and Schools in Pomona, California

My assessment of the park is the following:

*Crime in the area needs improvement since the park suffers from it and the visitors of the park feel it could be safer.

*  There are a variety of amenities at this park which include a two playground sites, a large field for sports, a skate park, basketball courts, and a recreational center for the kids.

* There were starnge people at the picnic tables and it did not feel safe to be around since some of the people were consuming alcohol.

* There was a total of 7 adults, 6 children, 2 teenagers  on a Wednesday between 2:45 pm- 3:30 pm

My assessment of the park is the following:

* Crime seemed minimal and had a safe environment as well as a welcoming feeling to it. Local people took care of their park and made an effort to report any strange activity or graffiti right away. The people are proud of their neighborhood park.

* The only downside to this park is that it is separated by the hill and the park is hidden from people who wouldn't think of going up the stairs to peek at what is on top.

* There could be more challenging equipment for the children like rope webs for the kids to climb on.

*Many people were enjoying the open field for sports, exercise, and flying small airplanes.

*This park is always full on the weekends but mostly the soccer field more than the playground.

* There was a total of many adults and children since school had just ended on a Wednesday at 1:33pm-2:15pm

My assessment of the park is the following:

*There were many "strange" people hanging out in the soccer fields and made the place seem a questionable one. Many homeless people also are found on the boundary of the park.

*It could be cleaner and neater.

*The playground equipment was clean and not damage and even better that the other parks equipment. There also seem to be things other parks didn't have like a seesaw and was spaced out appropriately giving the children and young students more space while still providing visibility the parents need if watching more than one child.

*The park has many amenities including; baseball fields, tennis courts, community pool, large field, and basketball courts.

*Many people enjoy the park on weekends.

*There was a total of 5 adults, 9 children and 2 dogs on a Wednesday at  1:10pm-1:30pm.

My assessment of the park is the following:

*During the day it seems to be a safe park but at night the lighting could be improved so that undesirable ones stay out of the park.

*The equipment is clean and not damaged.

* The open space is not ideal for sports so this park is focused on the younger students who attend elementary school.

*This park is also packed on the weekends with families and the space is used to it's full potential. The children do use it after school with their parents awaiting them there.

*There is plenty of shade so everyone has a comfortable place to enjoy.

*Many of the lights need to be fixed and are not called in by the people who live in the area.

*There was a total of 4 adults, and 5 children on a Wednesday at noon to 1:00pm.
